Planning a New Website: What to Prepare First

Sep 14, 2025

Good website projects begin with clear business decisions. Preparing the right information early reduces delays and prevents design from becoming guesswork.

Define the primary business goal

Choose the main outcome the site should support: enquiries, sales, appointments, applications, customer service, or another measurable action. Secondary goals can follow, but they should not obscure the priority.

Describe the audience and their questions

List the customer groups the site must serve, what each group needs, what concerns delay a decision, and what language they use to describe the problem.

Create a page inventory

Start with the homepage, service or product pages, About page, proof or project pages, and contact path. Add pages only when they have a distinct purpose.

Gather content and proof

Collect current service details, team information, testimonials, project examples, credentials, policies, brand files, and original photography. Assign an owner and approval deadline for each item.

List required features

Separate essential launch features from future ideas. Forms, booking, payments, customer accounts, multilingual content, search, and third-party integrations can affect the platform, scope, and schedule.

Document brand requirements

Provide approved logos, colors, typography, imagery, and examples of the brand in use. If those do not exist, include brand development in the project scope.

Confirm ownership and technical access

Identify who controls the domain, DNS, hosting, email, analytics, Search Console, and existing website. Plan how credentials and assets will be handed over securely.

Set budget, roles, and approvals

Decide who provides content, who gives consolidated feedback, who has final approval, and what ongoing maintenance is needed. A realistic schedule depends on these responsibilities.

Plan measurement before launch

Define the actions worth tracking and ensure analytics, Search Console, form delivery, redirects, and consent requirements are included in the launch checklist.
